Following the children's interest of Cicadas

TKW have become very interested in Cicadas. We have been collecting Cicada shells and also searching for live ones. We have asked questions and then used youtube clips to answer our questions.
We have learnt that:
  • Cicadas live underground for 15 years before they climb to the surface.
  • They shed their shells when their wings have grown...we thought this was similar to caterpillars.
  • Once they rise from the soil, cicadas live for four to six weeks.
In this video we went outside because we could hear some loud noises coming from the tree. We stood under the tree and could hardly hear each other talk. Because it was so loud we thought that there must be alot of cicadas in the tree so each of us made a prediction about how many we thought there were...

Here is another fact
Cicadas are among the loudest insects known to man, and a swarm of them can produce sounds up to 120 decibels. That's louder than a rock concert (about 115 decibels), and comparable to the noise from a chainsaw (humans start to experience pain from sound at the 110 to 120 decibel level).
