Finn's urge to twist and unscrew

Through the past couple of weeks we started to find lots of our resources being unscrewed. They had been twisted and pulled and then left behind. Things like our dollies buggy, our alarm clock and our wooden chairs. Miss Stella then realised that a child had an urge to unscrew/screw and twist things. I watched carefully throughout a couple of days and spotted Finn twisting things in his hands but why?

Some children may do things that seem crazy to adults, why do children fill their pockets with play dough? or push an empty pram around? Or fill a bucket only to empty it again and again? These activities can annoy adults as the actions may seem senseless. Why does he throw everything? Why does she tip everything out, making a mess but not actually playing?
These actions are all part of how children explore, investigate and learn. To children this is play- important play, which is serious business!
These are primal urges to play.

Simply put, Urges are repeated patterns, or actions in a child's play. Children are driven by an innate curiosity and a need to find out about the world around them. They do this by repeating an action over and over, perhaps in different places, or with different objects.

I pulled out our mini wood work table and a box of large nuts and bolts to try to further support Finn in his urges to make sense of the world around him. Some of the other children were also interested in new classroom equipment...

As children do this they are expanding their understanding of their world and of what they already know.

  1. Oh this made me giggle! :) Thanks for setting this up Miss Stella! We've noticed Finn doing this at home. Sometimes we find him in our garage trying to reassemble what he's pulled apart.
